Walk and Talk – Netwalking with Annie Page
I recently joined business coach Annie Page on her netwalking adventure in Looe. I was immediately struck by one thing – Annie’s approach to networking has the potential to transform the way we do business here in Cornwall.
The idea behind Annie’s netwalking sessions is beautifully simple. Bring professionals together to talk business whilst they explore spectacular hidden spots of Cornwall that, quite often, they have never experienced.
There’s plenty of science to back up why this approach works. Numerous studies have shown that exercise is a natural mood enhancer, so it is no surprise that when we’re out walking the connections we make in our brain are more likely to be positive ones. Being active helps the brain register ‘happy associations’ and this creates the perfect foundation for positive conversations and meaningful relationships with like-minded professionals.
More than that though, exercise really can change the way we think. Being outside means we think differently and more creatively. We’re also likely to be more receptive to new ideas and ways of thinking. The University of British Columbia recently conducted a study showing that regular exercise appears to boost the size of the hippocampus in the brain, the part of the brain that promote verbal memory and learning. So – there’s plenty of evidence to show that getting out and about is good for us.
The problem is that these days, it’s all too easy to become sedentary as we focus our energies on business success. It can be hard to get the balance right.
That’s where netwalking comes in.
When I took part in Annie’s netwalking session, it felt very natural to chat and mingle with people. As we encountered different terrain, the groups of people changed and intermingled very naturally with the ebb and flow of each hill, allowing for very fluid networking. And when you walk side by side rather than talking face to face, there is an ease to the conversation and a different tempo to the discussion.
Annie’s ethos is simple: Business doesn’t have to be done in a stuffy office or conference room. Outside surrounded by beautiful scenery you’ll be inspired to think differently about your business.
I’m a definite convert. Why not try it – I guarantee you’ll be hooked.
